SPECIAL RECOGNITION

United Methodist Women (UMW), a women’s group at First United Methodist Church on West Monroe Avenue, Harford, hold an annual student recognition day at the church for parishioners who go above and beyond the call of duty.

They include: Shelly Olson, Guy Tuxhorn, Nathan VanderPas, and Margaret Wendt.

Shelly Olson has served the Church in various ways: She not only enthusiastically co-taught the eighth-grade Sunday school class, she assisted with the evening confirmation class as well. She is also a Vacation Bible School teacher–and has been one for several years–and was a substitute teacher for Little Lambs Preschool, plus helped out with Scout Sunday.

Guy Tuxhorn is a go-to guy, something most organizations need, especially for systems and technology. Guy is considered a life saver for those who are techno challenged. He programmed and installed the church telephone system, provided training and shortcuts for the staff to use. He’s always available to help with computer problems–even returning calls for help when he’s out of town.

When he’s not involved with systems issues at church, he’s a phone call away from assisting other parishioners with their home computer issues.

Nathan VanderPas is an intelligent and ambitious young man. He’s been helping with Vacation Bible School since he was in the seventh grade during which he spent time leading the children in games. Three mission trips are part of his resume and he willingly participates in fundraisers with the Youth Group for the mission trips as well as other youth activities. Nathan has a number of other accomplished skills, including computer diagnostics and maintenance.

Margaret Wendt developed a resume admired by many at First Church, being a faithful contributor to the Church’s missions. As a UMW member, she is serving and has served on First Church’s Mary Circle in various executive positions including membership/nurture and outreach coordinator; education and interpretation coordinator; as well as a member of the disciple Bible Study group at First Church.

Margaret’s personal life bio shines as much as her public life, working as a school librarian at Rossman Elementary and Central Middle School. She shares that institutional knowledge with First Church UMW through her devotion to the church children’s library, organizing and cataloging the books.
