Through the efforts of The Threshold Incorporated, Employment Services Division over sixty-nine area businesses have added employees with disabilities to their current workforce. All sixty-nine were honored during October—Disability Employment Awareness Month. The Employment Specialists at the Threshold personally visited each company and presented them with a “Thank You Appreciation Award” along with a PayDay candy bar. The candy bar served as a way to say that, by hiring a person with a disability, they were in effect opening up a new life for that person and that their weekly “pay day” is a day of pride for a job well done. Washington County currently has a 13% unemployment rate, but the unemployment rate for people with disabilities is 70%. “These sixty-nine employers have played such a great role in helping people with disabilities lead fulfilling lives,” commented, Tom Bergerud, Executive Director of The Threshold. We also wish to extend our thanks to the many businesses who have supported us in the past.
